In the summer of 2017 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, a collector of rare James Dean films stumbled upon a dusty box containing the first reel of an Italian print of the lost cult horror film End Zone 2 mislabeled as the classic Sally Field TV series, “The Flying Nun.” Beneath the reel, wrapped in crumbling, yellowing parchment, lay the scattered manuscript of the novelization of End Zone 2.
This discarded adaptation was initially penned by Jean Chiles Tempi in a single, feverish weekend in 1969, months before the film’s completion. Commissioned by her lover, producer Jacques Renault, just weeks before his mysterious death, the manuscript was shelved indefinitely when coroner Tex Beckerson, who acquired the rights, told Jean, “No one likes to read,” and canceled the publication.
Jean remained determined, adding a scattershot final chapter to meet Tex’s demands of “more cannibalism and more football,” but Tex was unswayed, and the book was still not to be…until now!
